Creating a modern online shopping experience

In my role with the UNM Bookstores, I have been responsible for managing and improving an e-commerce platform that generated more than $1 million in online sales in FY25. Over the past two years, my work has focused on enhancing user experience, modernizing visual identity, optimizing product organization, and leading a full-platform migration to support long-term performance.

2024 – IMPROVING THE EXISTING WEBSITE:

In 2024, I completed a full redesign of the existing e-commerce platform, which had become visually outdated, difficult to navigate, and confusing for users. This included a new homepage layout, improved promotional visibility, clearer product categories, standardized product descriptions, dedicated SEO strategy and consistent visual elements to improve the overall shopping experience.

These updates contributed to a measurable lift in online performance. Between FY23 and FY24, web sales increased by 25%.

HIGHLIGHT:
    • THE HOMEPAGE

Key changes in the homepage redesign included a dynamic homepage carousel, more visually engaging category tiles, dedicated brand highlights, and an extended homepage layout that improved product discoverability across the store’s full assortment.

2025 – PLATFORM MIGRATION:

As the UNM Bookstores transitioned to a new e-commerce provider in 2025, I led the restructuring and redesign of the e-commerce website from the ground up, all within a three-month turnaround. This work included creating a brand-new site map, migrating thousands of products, developing an updated visual identity for the homepage, and coordinating the integration of all content, categories and images to the new platform.

HIGHLIGHTS:
    • THE SITE MAP

Previously, the website organization split the Main and Medical–Legal stores, creating a confusing entry point where users had to select “Shop All Main” before seeing any actual product options. The new structure brings key categories to the top of the navigation, removing unnecessary steps and motivating customers to explore products right away.

    • THE HOMEPAGE

The new platform provided the flexibility needed to substantially enhance the homepage experience. I refined the carousel, expanded category highlights, preserved key brand features, and introduced lifestyle imagery to give major sections more visual context. I also added an Instagram plugin to showcase how customers can style our newest products, and extended the homepage layout to support deeper browsing and stronger discoverability.
